India Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma made 31 runs in five innings and 'opted out' of the fifth and final Test match in Sydney due to his poor form. Jasprit Bumrah led the team in his absence where India lost the match by six wickets to lose the series as well.

Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli also suffered with poor batting form but his similar dismissals in most of the matches drew critics attention. It also raised questions about why big names in the Indian team did not show up for the domestic matches for their respective states.

Kohli, 36, has not played any domestic cricket match since 2012. Rohit, on the other hand, last played his Ranji Trophy match in 2016.

Many former cricketers and big names in cricket have suggested that both players need to spend some time in domestic cricket.

Ranji Trophy 2024-25 Elite Group matches are set to restart after winter break on 23rd January 2025. But it will be interesting to see if these two turn up for their respective state teams in India's biggest domestic cricket tournament. Virat Kohli plays for Delhi and Rohit Sharma plays for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy.

With the ICC Champions Trophy starting on 19 February and England coming to play five T20Is and three ODIs from 22 January, there is not enough gap to play multiple games and considering that the next Test series is against England in June, it is unlikely that these two players will feature in the Ranji Trophy Elite group matches. However, the official statement is yet to come from both players.

Delhi will face Saurashtra in Round 6 of the Elite Group D match starting on 23 January and Railways in Round 7 match which will start on 30 January. Mumbai will face Jammu and Kashmir in Round 6 and Meghalaya in Round 7. Quarter-final matches will be played on 8 February, semi-finals on 17 February and the final is set to be played on 26th February.

Pool A will consist of the defending champion Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB – Indian Railways), along with Indian Army – Red, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Hockey Maharastra and Hockey Unit Of Tamil Nadu (HUTN).

Meanwhile, South Korea were knocked out by the defending champions, India, with a 1-4 defeat in the semi-final. In their pool stage encounter, South Korea had previously played to a 2-2 draw against their next opponent, Pakistan.

According to some media reports, both players have asked to be rested from the series against England so that they can be fresh for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Given their struggles with form, their selection in the Champions Trophy squad is still unclear.
