Ange Postecoglou believes Tottenham's EFL Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool will be a welcome distraction from their league formlucky play168 or lp99, which has been "nowhere near good enough." (More Football News)

Spurs host Liverpool, who have only lost once in 28 matches across all competitions this season, in the first leg of their last-four tie on Wednesday.

The last time Tottenham beat the holders in this competition marked their most recent piece of major silverware, as they overcame Chelsea in the 2008 EFL Cup final under Juande Ramos.

They enter Wednesday's game hampered by injuries and in dismal form, having gone four Premier League games without a win, with Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United leaving them 12th in the table, closer to the relegation zone (eight points) than the top four (12).

With as many as 10 first-teamers currently sidelined, Postecoglou feels there are mitigating circumstances for Spurs' form but knows they must push through this difficult period.

"I knew it would be a tough couple of months for us, but part of you is always optimistic that we won't have to deal with what we had to deal with for as long as we've had to deal with it," he said at Tuesday's pre-match press conference.

"So again, optimistically, I think we'll get through this and I think we'll get through it hopefully quickly.

"We've got a big game tomorrow night, obviously then the FA Cup [versus Tamworth on Sunday], our league form's nowhere near good enough.

"We've got to address that, so we can't just wait for it to all happen, so the planning is going on in the background for sure, but my immediate task is to make sure we make an impact on what we can right now.

"It is a separate competition tomorrow night. We have done well to get to the semi-final stage. We've beaten both Manchester clubs to do that. It hasn't been an easy road."

Tottenham moved to bring in Antonin Kinsky as their new backup goalkeeper after the January transfer window opened, and he is eligible for Wednesday's game.

“The final was really intense; the Chinese were breathing down our necks throughout the game and made it really difficult for us to create a clear goal scoring chance,” Harmanpreet said in a Hockey India release.

On Tuesday, deep inside Chinese Mongolia, the Harmanpreet Singh-led Men in Blue did just about enough to beat a spirited Chinese side. The occasion: the final of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024.

They have also been linked with a loan move for Paris Saint-Germain's Randal Kolo Muani, and while Postecoglou would not be drawn on such talk, he confirmed Spurs are seeking further additions.

"Look, we are still trying to help the squad and help the players. We are still down significant numbers," he said.

"We will have roughly 10 first-team players missing tomorrow. That's not easy so we are still looking to try to help the playing group. The club is working hard in a number of areas."

Tottenham did receive a boost on Tuesday as they activated a clause to extend Son Heung-min's contract until June 2026, and Postecoglou's aim is now to ensure the long-serving forward gets his hands on a trophy.

"Yeah it's brilliant. He has already had an outstanding career at this football club," Postecoglou said of Son.
